World GDP growth, 1961 to 2025
About this statistic
World GDP growth stood at 3 in 2025, up 0.7% on the previous period.
This series shows how much the world economy grew or shrank each year, measured in constant local prices by the World Bank. Growth rates strip out inflation, so a 3 percent reading means real output rose 3 percent. Since 1961 the series has ranged from -2.9 percent (2020) to 6.6 percent (1964); the latest reading is 2.9 percent for 2025, up from 2.9 percent the period before.
Recessions read as dips below zero. Because the base changes every year, a deep contraction followed by a strong rebound can leave output below its old peak even though the rebound year posts the bigger number.
Frequently asked questions
How often does this update?
The World Bank publishes annual figures on its World Development Indicators release cycle. This statistic refreshes automatically when new years appear.
Is this nominal or real growth?
Real. The World Bank computes growth from constant-price local currency GDP, so inflation is excluded from these rates.
