Steam's biggest games: where the players are
- The 100 most-played games on Steam averaged 5.9 million concurrent players in July 2026. Counter-Strike 2 alone holds 14 percent, and with Dota 2 (both tracked since SteamCharts began in July 2012) Valve's pair holds almost a quarter.
- Launches spike and fade; the top does not. Palworld peaked near 2.1 million at its January 2024 launch and now averages 418,000, still enough for third place. Marvel Rivals fell from 642,000 to 85,000, Slay the Spire 2 from 575,000 to 68,000. Meanwhile 30 of the 100 have been tracked since before 2016.
- "Player" means "running the app," and it shows: Task Bar Hero (a taskbar idle game out in June 2026), Bongo Cat and Wallpaper Engine all sit in the top 15 without anyone actively playing them.
What's happening
The chart tiles Steam's top 100 games by concurrent players, each sized by its July 2026 monthly average. Counter-Strike 2's tile dwarfs everything at 854,000 average concurrent players; Dota 2 (548,000), Palworld (418,000), PUBG: Battlegrounds (330,000) and the rest step down from there to THE FINALS at 13,000 in position 100.
Read as a market, it is strikingly top-heavy and strikingly old. The top three tiles hold 31 percent of the group's players. Half the list has been on SteamCharts for six years or more, and the two biggest tiles predate almost everything else on the board.
Launches fade, mainstays don't
The pattern repeats at every scale. Palworld's launch put roughly 2.1 million players in the game at once in January 2024; thirty months later it averages a fifth of that. Marvel Rivals peaked at 642,000 in January 2025, the month after launch, and holds 85,000 now. Slay the Spire 2 reached 575,000 in March 2026 and sits at 68,000 four months later. None of these are failures; they simply decayed to their durable audience, which is what almost every release does.
What the decay curves never touch is the top. Counter-Strike 2 and Dota 2 have been the two biggest games on Steam for most of the series' fourteen years, and the games behind them are old too: Rust (tracked since 2013) averages 106,000, Stardew Valley 68,000, Warframe 59,000. The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth posted its biggest month on record in July 2026, twelve years after release. On Steam, the reliable giants are the ones that stopped being new a decade ago.
What counts as playing
Concurrent players is a literal measure: everyone whose copy is running at the same moment, playing or not. That single definition produces the strangest tiles on the board. Task Bar Hero, an idle game that lives in the Windows taskbar, released in June 2026 and immediately ranks fifth at 284,000. Bongo Cat, a desktop pet, ranks sixth. Wallpaper Engine, which most owners never see as a window at all, has charted for a decade. They are not gaming's biggest hits; they are apps people never close, and on this measure that is the same thing.
The measure still earns its place. It is the only engagement number Steam publishes continuously for every title, it is comparable across genres and years, and its quirks are visible rather than hidden: you can see exactly which tiles are toys. The statistic page documents how the readings are collected and averaged, including where the older history is sparser.
What to watch
This ranking is fixed to July 2026; the ongoing per-game pages are where the lines move. Counter-Strike 2's series shows whether the leader holds its 850,000; PUBG's whether a former record-holder keeps its plateau; Wallpaper Engine's whether the idle apps persist. The decay question needs a future edition of this ranking to answer: recent breakouts settled at a fifth or less of their peak audiences, Palworld in two and a half years, Marvel Rivals in eighteen months, Slay the Spire 2 in four, and whether the next big launch breaks that pattern is what a later month's top 100, set against this one, would show.
