US electricity generation by source: how gas and renewables replaced coal
Natural gas generated 1,870 TWh of US power in 2024, 44 percent of the six main sources. Coal is down 68 percent from its 2007 peak, and wind plus solar passed it for the first time.

US coal generation rose 13 percent in 2025: a rebound year inside a shrinking share
Coal's first increase since 2021 added 85 terawatt-hours. Solar added 76, its seventh straight double-digit year, and coal's share of generation is 17 percent against 28 in 2018.
